Here’s a thought:  instead of McCain exploiting any tragedy resulting from Hurricane Gustav, why doesn’t the Obama campaign and the McCain campaign work together to do something in response?

They could both appear and speak at a press conference to discuss what is being done and what Gulf Coast residents still need to do.  They could also put together some kind of relief program, coordinated with the Red Cross, that would promote a truly American response to what happened.

Republicans probably wouldn’t want to go for this, because they’re too focused on the politics of being unpolitical, and Democrats want Republicans to mess this up.

If we’re really putting on our “American hats,” though, then perhaps both candidates and campaigns should work together on this.
